Fellowships
The Materials Science and Engineering program is pleased to offer two different fellowship opportunities for 2026 - 2027. The first is the Classic Fellowship, which is for faculty who wish to develop a new research direction and will provide one graduate student stipend for one year. (This is the traditional fellowship that has been offered since the start of the program.)
The second fellowship is the new Innovation Fellowship, which recognizes and supports high-performing MSE students who have demonstrated outstanding research, scholarship, and innovation in materials research. It is open to current MSE students in at least their third year of study.

Materials Science and Engineering Classic Fellowship
Faculty who wish to develop a new research direction are invited to apply for the Classic Fellowship, which will provide one graduate student stipend for one year. The proposed interdisciplinary research should lead to a dissertation with a substantial materials focus. These fellowships are nonrenewable. Two or more faculty are expected to mentor the student during the fellowship, and an external proposal is expected to be submitted to continue the research. (This is the traditional fellowship that has been offered since the start of the program.)
Current first-year and second-year students are eligible to have fellowship proposals submitted on their behalf.

Materials Science and Engineering Innovation Fellowship
The Materials Science and Engineering Innovation Fellowship recognizes and supports high-performing MSE students who have demonstrated outstanding research, scholarship, and innovation in materials research. The Innovation Fellowship provides one graduate student stipend for one year to support an MSE student in their continued research and studies towards the MSE degree.
